Art through their eyes: Life Cipher selects from the SCHUNCK collection
What happens when young creatives cast their eyes over the SCHUNCK art collection? For this edition of The selection of, the talent collective Life Cipher was invited to fill a space in the Art Depot – and they did so without a predetermined plan.
It all started with a middle finger. Or rather: a photo by Dean Kisters that captures the rawness of Heerlen. A “done deal”, according to the collective, because Kisters is “one of us.” From that first connection, the selection grew: images that capture the character of the city, the Glaspaleis as an icon (like in the portrait of Frits Peutz by Fons Haagmans), the skate scene of Chris Johanson, photography by Alexander Basile… Each piece reflects how Life Cipher sees themselves and their city.
A platform for young talent
Life Cipher is a talent development program for young people rooted in disciplines such as street art, fashion, photography, film, music, and breaking. The program is a collaboration between Kool Cult and SCHUNCK Museum and offers coaching, peer learning, and a strong network—with the goal of growth, connection, and knowledge sharing. The participating creators shape their culture and community in a contemporary way and seek new ways to tell stories, even within established institutions like SCHUNCK.
