During Cultura Nova, SCHUNCK brings together art, theatre, heritage and film

SCHUNCK and Cultura Nova present Without any Doubt, a double exhibition that brings together André Joosten’s work as a painter and set designer for the first time. The exhibition can be seen at two locations from 29 August to 6 September: at SCHUNCK Glaspaleis and in the foyer of PLT Theater Heerlen.

Joosten studied painting at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and scenography at the Jan van Eyck Academie. He went on to become one of the Netherlands’ leading set designers, working for major theatre companies in the Netherlands and abroad. At the same time, he developed his own body of work as a painter. For a long time, he kept the two disciplines separate, although he believed they came from the same source. Without any Doubt brings both sides of his artistic practice together for the first time.

For Joosten, rough edges were not a flaw but the strength of his work. His paintings and designs leave room for chance, change and imagination. This perspective connected with Heerlen, a city whose unfinished character always appealed to him.

During Cultura Nova, you can also visit Ina van Zyl: Where Are You From. De Volkskrant awarded the exhibition ★★★★★ and described it as a "mysterious, sensual universe".

In the first major Dutch retrospective of Van Zyl’s work, you can discover more than twenty years of her artistic practice: from early comics and painting experiments to recent paintings, drawings and prints. Through extreme close-ups, cropped compositions and saturated colours, Van Zyl shows how everyday subjects can be both recognisable and alienating.

Fifty years after Lange Lies and Lange Jan

Cultura Nova also brings Heerlen’s mining heritage to SCHUNCK. From 29 July, SCHUNCK Library is presenting a photo exhibition about the iconic Lange Lies and Lange Jan chimneys, curated by historian Marcel Put. The exhibition marks exactly fifty years since both chimneys disappeared from Heerlen’s skyline.

On Saturday 29 August, the Nederlands Mijnmuseum, SCHUNCK and Stichting Ouwe Leem are organising a special coffee table on Festivalplein. Visitors can share memories of Lange Lies and Lange Jan over black coffee and black plum flan, just as they did fifty years ago.

Film among the trees

The outdoor cinema De Buitenspiegel also returns during Cultura Nova. In collaboration with Filmhuis De Spiegel and Cultura Nova, SCHUNCK will screen The Lobster by director Yorgos Lanthimos in Aambos. The forest provides the setting for this award-winning dark comedy about love, freedom and social expectations.
