The Politics of Everyday Life at SCHUNCK

From 18 May, The Politics of Everyday Life will be on view in the staircase at SCHUNCK: a series of murals in which four artists share their vision on the impact of the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

What does this treaty — which has defined the constitutional structure between the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten since 1954 — mean for everyday life within the Kingdom?

Through their murals, Christopher Pablo, Elijah Nicholas, Marcel van den Berg and Ruthvienca Pietersz explore how political, economic and social power structures shape daily realities. According to curator Raenys Martis, the project creates space for dialogue, reflection and confrontation. Visitors are invited to look, reflect and join the conversation on how politics is interwoven with our daily lives.

On the Other Side of the Ocean

The Politics of Everyday Life connects to the exhibition On the Other Side of the Ocean, which explores the relationship between Curaçao and Limburg. The central themes of the main exhibition are expanded in various locations throughout the Glaspaleis, including these murals in the staircase.

The murals are part of a longer tradition at SCHUNCK Museum, where since 2012 artists have been invited to intervene in the architecture of the Glaspaleis. These works, spread across the five floors of the staircase, are temporary in visibility but permanently part of the collection.

The Politics of Everyday Life is on view free of charge until 14 September 2025 during the opening hours of SCHUNCK Glaspaleis.
