Bon Ku Ne: a Caribbean Game

For this edition of Frictions Festival, curator Raenys Martis invites you to join in a game of Bon Ku Ne – a Caribbean twist on bingo. Expect prizes, music, and a game that is more than just entertainment. Bon Ku Ne is not merely a pastime, but a social moment filled with connection, laughter, and togetherness, with culture and community at its heart.

Raenys is the curator of the staircase murals The Politics of Everyday Life (commissioned by SCHUNCK Museum), in which artists reflect on the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In collaboration with SCHUNCK Library, he also developed PRETU Stories: a programme exploring the Afro-Diaspora, the legacies of colonial history, and visions of a future unburdened by the weight of the past.

What is Bon Ku Ne?

Bon Ku Ne is a traditional game of chance originating from the Dutch Caribbean, similar in structure to bingo but played with Spanish playing cards instead of numbers. These cards feature colourful illustrations of coins, clubs, swords, and cups. The game is especially popular among women in Antillean communities and is often played in cheerful settings with music and snacks.

What makes Bon Ku Ne special is that it’s not just about winning – it’s about the experience. Often played during neighbourhood parties, church gatherings, or family events, the game is infused with a lively, joyful atmosphere. The game leader plays a key role in this with humour, theatrical descriptions, and sometimes even singing or music.
