The ideal route through Rooted in Change
Rooted in Change is on view until 1 March 2026 at three locations in the centre of Heerlen: SCHUNCK Museum, Heerlen Town Hall and the Dutch Mining Museum.
Together, they show how one of the Netherlands’ oldest corporate art collections took root in the former mining region and grew into a collection of both regional and international significance. The three locations are within walking distance and form a natural route through the city.
Start at SCHUNCK Museum – Glaspaleis
In the museum gallery of the Glaspaleis, the contemporary part of the collection takes centre stage. Paintings, photography, video and installations reveal how themes such as community, labour and change have evolved over time. The Glaspaleis is a fitting place to begin: it connects the DSM collection with SCHUNCK’s municipal collection.
Bongerd 18 | Tue–Sun 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM | € 11.50 / free with Museum Card or VriendenLoterij VIP Card
Tip: take a break and enjoy the view
Above SCHUNCK Museum, on the fifth floor of the Glaspaleis, Brasserie Mijn Streek has reopened - a lovely spot for lunch before or after your visit, with panoramic views over the city.
Walk to the Town Hall (approx. 4 minutes)
Exit the Glaspaleis, walk towards the Bongerd and continue to the Geleenstraat. The Town Hall is on the left-hand side. The entrance is located at the reception desk on Geleenstraat.
Continue at Heerlen Town Hall
In the monumental hall – fully renovated in 2023 – you’ll find 26 works from the early years of the DSM collection. These paintings and works on paper reveal where it all began: art that once adorned DSM’s offices and meeting rooms. The Town Hall has a long-standing tradition as an exhibition venue since 1945, making it a place where past and present literally meet.
Geleenstraat 25 | Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM | Thu 8:30 AM – 8:00 PM | free admission
Walk to the Dutch Mining Museum (approx. 4 minutes)
Return along Geleenstraat in the direction of Honigmannstraat (approx. 150 metres). Then turn right into Dr. Poelsstraat. At the end of the street, on the left-hand side, you’ll find the Dutch Mining Museum, housed in the former Kneepkens department store designed by architect Frits Peutz.
End at the Dutch Mining Museum
On the third floor – in the Colour section – mining, identity and art come together. The selection of 21 works ranges from mining landscapes and portraits of miners (koempels) to contemporary pieces by regional and international artists. The presentation shows how the mining story is not just history, but also a source of inspiration for new perspectives.
