SCHUNCK buzzes during The Notorious IBE

From 15 to 17 August, Heerlen is all about The Notorious IBE. SCHUNCK fully joins in with exhibitions, talks, new artworks, and the launch of a special heritage display case about the hip-hop scene in Heerlen.

Hip-hop at the heart of the Glaspaleis

During IBE, SCHUNCK Glaspaleis transforms into a meeting place for hip-hop culture, art, and audiences. In collaboration with Kool Cult, a diverse programme has been put together featuring Q&As, panel discussions, performances, and a photo exhibition by Tyson Ernste — a photographer and filmmaker from Heerlen. Ernste also opens the first edition of the new heritage display case on the mezzanine: a permanent spot where SCHUNCK, under the banner Young Heritage, showcases stories and objects from subcultures. The launch focuses entirely on the hip-hop scene in Heerlen.

Street art gets a new place in the city

Outside, by the west entrance of the Glaspaleis, SCHUNCK is launching a new street art initiative: the rotating exhibition MODULE. This will be a space for constantly changing murals, with a focus on artistic quality and local talent. IBE 2025 marks the kickoff of this project. Robin Vermeulen was asked to develop a fresh vision for murals in Heerlen, and the first artist has already been announced. This pilot marks the start of a series of (semi)permanent interventions in public spaces.

Art in motion: Life Cipher in the Art Depot

This summer, it’s the young creators of Life Cipher who make their voices heard in SCHUNCK’s Art Depot. This talent development programme — set up by Kool Cult and SCHUNCK Museum — supports young people active in disciplines such as street art, fashion, and music. For The selection of: Life Cipher, they compiled a personal selection from SCHUNCK’s art collection. The presentation is on view from 2 August to 26 September.

New connections between art and the city

Something special can also be seen in the public space during IBE: together with the municipality of Heerlen, SCHUNCK unveils a new artwork by artist Chaim van Luit. An addition to the city that — like the rotating wall — opens up new perspectives on art beyond the museum walls.
