Heerlen joins forces for Andy Warhol: Vanitas at SCHUNCK Museum
SCHUNCK Museum presents a diverse cultural program around the exhibition Andy Warhol: Vanitas, featuring new activities, collaborations, and inspiring events that bring Andy Warhol's legacy to life in Heerlen.
In line with previous blockbusters, SCHUNCK is presenting a diverse cultural program centered on the Andy Warhol: Vanitas exhibition, with an even greater focus this year on partnerships within Heerlen.
The activity program brings the art and influence of Andy Warhol to life with tours, interactive art projects, and special family activities like Kloemele (Get Creative) with Warhol. Additionally, thematic lectures and monthly film screenings at Filmhuis De Spiegel dive deeper into Warhol's work, life, and the exhibition themes. Every other Sunday, there are free guided tours of the exhibition, and every alternate Wednesday, there are special family-oriented tours. Children can use the Museum Bag to explore the exhibition through challenging questions and creative activities. The library also offers an extensive selection of books on Andy Warhol and the ‘Vanitas’ theme.
Tears Factory
From 10 November to 1 December 2024, the ‘Tears Factory,’ a creative hub inspired by Warhol's legendary Factory, will open at Backrooms, Geleenstraat 40. This initiative, in collaboration with Kool Cult and designer Naud Verboeket of Tears, provides a space for fashion, art, and music. The program features masterclasses, inspiring talks, and workshops, including a painting workshop on the opening day and a Graphic Design Masterclass led by Studio Laylow.
Warhol Café #2
On 23 November 2024, SCHUNCK will host the second Warhol Café, following the first edition in October in collaboration with Greylight Projects. The Warhol Cafés are informal evenings with accessible talks thematically (and sometimes loosely) linked to 'Vanitas' or Warhol's life and work. This second evening will take place at Tears Factory, where designer Naud Verboeket will welcome Georgy Dendoe, artist and co-founder of the clothing brand Sumibu, who will share insights from the fashion world. Visitors will also have exclusive early access to the Andy Warhol: Vanitas exhibition.
Roxette Capriles, Frictions #7
Frictions Festival Returns
On 12 December 2024, SCHUNCK's central hall will transform into an underground club for the seventh edition of the Frictions Festival, featuring the Pop-Up Klub by multidisciplinary artist Roxette Capriles. This evening of eclectic DJ sets and performances will explore Warhol's many identities.
Additionally, students from the Art, Theatre, and Media (KTM) department at VISTA College will host a unique festival evening on January 30, 2025, during Frictions Festival #8, showcasing their creativity and talents in an interactive experience.
City Collaborations
SCHUNCK continues its active collaboration with cultural partners in Heerlen. The Tears Factory marks a major step in this partnership. The various Warhol Cafés, the diverse film program at De Spiegel, and the recent partnership with PLT (featuring Gob Squad's Kitchen in September) highlight ongoing cultural activity in Heerlen and SCHUNCK's commitment to the local community. Poppodium NIEUWE NOR also contributes with a Velvet Underground tribute by Bettie Serveert on Friday 7 March 2025.
